It was an exciting weekend for the NFL as the playoffs began with wild card games. Unfortunately, the Atlanta Falcons’ playoff run and their season came to an end yesterday as they lost to the NFC East Champion New York Giants 24-2 in the wild card round of the NFC playoffs in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giants will go on to face the Green Bay Packers in the NFC semifinal next Sunday. The Falcons close out a 2011 season that left them with ten wins and seven losses.
The 2012 Heart of the Community Awards of Honor recipients have been named. This year’s honorees include Bryan Shealy, Shirley Miller Denmon, Nina Lovel, Greg Sumner, Nancy and David Hunter and Young Heart Rachel Rogers. This year’s Board of Governor’s Honoree is Earl Tillman. All will be honored at the 26th annual “An Affair of the Heart” on February 18th . The Heart of the Community Awards are sponsored annually by Redmond Regional Medical Center and produced by the Heart of Community Board of Governors.
The new public entrance to the Emergency Care Center at Floyd Medical center is officially open today. The new, canopied entry is located between the hospital’s North Entrance and the existing ECC, facing the corner of Turner McCall Boulevard and Martha Berry Boulevard. Vehicle access to the entrance is available via Second Avenue and Turner McCall Boulevard. A number of other new and improved ECC areas are open for the first time today, including an expanded waiting area, additional triage rooms and 12 additional patient rooms.
If you are in need of financial assistance with your heating bills, there’s good news! Additional funding has been allocated for the Low-Income Home Energy (Heating) Assistance Program (or LIHEAP) administered by Tallatoona CAP Inc. The program opened to the elderly and home bound on November first, but was halted a few weeks later due to lack of funding. Due to additional funding, Katrina Estes, service coordinator for Tallatoona CAP Inc., says the program will resume today. Appointments will be scheduled at local county offices. You must call for an appointment. Those with (706) area codes are asked to schedule one by calling (toll free) (770) 773-7730. You can also call (770) 383-3292 for more information. No walk ins will be permitted, an appointment must be made to see if you are eligible for LIHEAP.
