Congratulations goes out to Shorter University baseball’s Ryan Newell. The junior pitcher was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 227th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday afternoon. The Marietta native becomes the 17th draft pick in program history and the first since Cliff Flagello was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in 2007, according to a Shorter sports release.
Jacob Travis is returning to his alma mater of Model High School to serve as the school’s head boys basketball coach. He is replacing Andy Akin, who recently stepped down from the position. Travis, a former basketball star at Model, has most recently served as head coach at Adairsville. His father, Milt, is a notable former Model coach.
The Rome Braves were off yesterday and get back into action tonight with a six game home stand at State Mutual Stadium that will continue thru Sunday and will bring to the Greenville Drive and the Augusta Greenjackets to town, each for three games. Game one against the Drive is set for tonight at 7 pm and will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com. The Atlanta Braves were off yesterday and return to action in their current road trip with three games against the Miami Marlins in Miami, Florida tonight thru Thursday night. Tim Hudson is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Braves tonight. First pitch is set for 7:10 pm at Miami’s new Marlins Park. The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball. Air time for the pre-game show is 5:55 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.
The Rome Braves remain winless for the month of June as they lost to the Lexington Legends 4-1 yesterday afternoon in the series closer between the teams in Lexington, Kentucky.
