There will be life again at the Philips Arena in Atlanta as the NBA lock out is coming to an end. The Atlanta Hawks have released their schedule for 2011-2012. The regular season will begin for the Hawks on Tuesday, December 27th on the road against the New Jersey Nets. The Hawks have a couple of pre-season games prior to that. The first is set for Monday, December 19th in Charlotte, North Carolina against the Bobcats. The second will be at home against the Bobcats on Thursday, December 22nd.
It’s also almost time for the 2011 NAIA Football National Championship Game. St. Xavier from Illinois will take on Carroll from Montana in the big game on Saturday, December 17th at 4:30 pm at Barron Stadium in Rome. Northwest Georgia cheers on the Calhoun High School football team as the Yellow Jackets return to the Georgia Dome this Friday for the Class AA state championship game. For the fourth straight year, they will play Buford for the title. Tip off is set for 4:30 pm.
In local college basketball news, Shorter University’s Hawks and Lady Hawks are moving on up in the national polls. The NAIA released its first regular season edition of the Men’s and Women’s Division I Basketball Coaches Top 25 Polls last night. The Hawks, who are undefeated with nine straight wins to begin the 2011-2012 season, came in at number 5 in the men’s poll, while the Lady Hawks, who have eight wins and one loss so far this season, are ranked number 18. This is the first time that the Hawks have made it to the top five since the beginning of the NAIA national polls in 2000.
