The 2011 NAIA Football National Championship is coming up this Saturday. Carroll College from Montana will take on St. Xavier University from Illinois in this year’s championship game. Carroll College won last year’s NAIA game in Rome. This is St. Xavier’s first trip to “The City of Seven Hills”. Head Coach Mike Feminis, who served on the committee to bring the NAIA game to Rome, says that he is excited to be participating in the championship game at Barron Stadium.

In college basketball, Shorter University’s 5th ranked Hawks picked up a couple of wins at the Bryan College Classic over the weekend in Dayton, Tennessee. They beat Tennessee Temple 86-77 on Friday night, which was followed by a 80-53 victory over host Bryan on Saturday night. Shorter’s 18th ranked Lady Hawks beat College of Coastal Georgia 65-50 in Brunswick on Saturday night. The Lady Hawks will play their final game before the Christmas holidays tonight in Carrollton against West Georgia at 8 pm. In high school football news from over the weekend – finally!!! A state championship for the Calhoun Yellow Jackets!! The Jackets beat Buford 27-24 in overtime on Friday in the Class AA State Championship game at the Georgia Dome. It was the first time in four years that the Calhoun topped Buford for the state title.
The 2011 Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival Basketball Tournament begins this Friday, December 16th and will pick back up next Monday thru Thursday, December 19th thru 22nd. Tune in for action from the tournament on WLAQ AM 1410 and 95.7 FM The Ridge. Games will be played at Berry and Georgia Highlands Colleges and the Forum.
