Donations are wanted for “Santa for Seniors”, an initiative co-ordinated by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation with the goal of helping less fortunate seniors in Rome and Floyd County to have a Merry Christmas.

“Santa for Seniors” was created about a decade ago.  Deputy Jimmy Alred of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office was inspired to create the program after he witnessed a resident of a local nursing home spending the holiday alone.  The program has grown from serving two seniors in its first year to approximately 101 seniors last year, according to an RFPR media release.

Allred enthuses, “It’s a really great program.  When you go out and deliver gifts to these people…just a little bit makes them so happy.  It’s the fact that people care about them.”

Well over a hundred seniors will be provided gifts this year through “Santa for Seniors”.  Rome and Floyd County residents that would like to sponsor a senior are advised to call Allred at (706) 291-4111 or Tammy Bryant, special populations coordinator for Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation, at (706) 234-0383 for more information.

Monetary donations to the program are also welcome, along with items such as toiletries, pajamas, socks and slippers.
