Saturday is Veterans Day, a day to honor all those who have served in our nation’s armed forces.
The annual Veterans Day ceremony at Myrtle Hill Cemetery will be hosted by the American Legion, Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 on Saturday at 11 am, in Veterans Plaza. Floyd County’s District Attorney Leigh Patterson will serve as the keynote speaker, and the Model High School band will play patriotic music, according to Post Commander Steve Rood. In addition, wreaths will be laid on the tomb of America’s Known Soldier, Pvt. Charles Graves.
Rood advises those who plan to attend the ceremony to arrive at the cemetery at around 10:30 am, as parking in the area will be limited.
Attendees are invited over to the Legion’s post at 5 Shorter Avenue after the service for hamburgers and hot dogs.
The Americanism Committee of the Exchange Club of Rome will hold a Veterans Day Event on Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm on the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds. It will feature military exhibits, veterans support organizations and a car show (to benefit Toys for Tots). Georgia Highlands College will offer free oral screenings, and Georgia Northwestern Technical College will provide haircuts for male and female veterans at the event.
A number of local schools and businesses are also hosting special events to honor those who have served as we head into Veterans Day weekend.
