Runners and walkers, a little more than a month remains until it will be time to lace up your shoes for the 33rd annual Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower 5K Road Race and 2 Mile Health Walk.  This popular event is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, August 18th; once again this year, it will raise funds for the Exchange Club Family Resource Center.

While the month of August is notorious for its ‘dog days’, FRC Director Tina Bartleson anticipates pleasant conditions for race day.

Registration is now open for the chip-timed 5K (a USATF Certified Course).  Participants may register online at  The cost is $25 for the 5K and $20 for the 2 Mile through July 27th, $30 for the 5K and $25 for the 2 Mile from July 28th to August 8th.  Teams of 10 or more (in any combination of run or walk) are eligible to receive a discount of $3 a person; team registrations must be submitted together no later than August 8th in order to qualify for the discount.

Registration will be offered on race day from 6:30 am to 7:30 am at a cost of $35 for the 5K and $30 for the 2 Mile.

Money raised from the “Clocktower Race” will go towards the FRC’s Parent Aide program, according to Bartleson.

The August 18th race will begin at 8 am; the 5K will start on Second Avenue, run through historic downtown Rome, Myrtle Hill and (the ever-challenging) Clocktower Hill.  The 2-Mile Health Walk follows a similar route, excluding the Clocktower Hill in favor of the Riverwalk Path.

Volunteers are also being sought to assist with the race.  To learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact the FRC at (706) 290-0764.
