LIGHT SNOW ON TUESDAY, FREEZING TEMPERATURES TODAY LEAD TO CONCERN OVER ICY ROADS

A light snow fell over the Greater Rome area on Tuesday evening and may be on the ground for a day or two due to freezing temperatures.  The National Weather Service reports that about a half of an inch of precipitation fell at the Russell Regional Airport.

The winter weather advisory posted by the NWS remains in place for our area until 9 am this morning.  A wind chill advisory is additionally in effect until 1 pm.

Rome and Floyd County Schools, St. Mary’s, Unity Christian and Darlington School are all closed today due to the weather, along with a number of other schools and institutions in Northwest Georgia.

Trion City Schools will be closed Wednesday, January 17, 2018.

Heritage First Bank will be closed today.

River City Bank will be closed today.

Rome Municipal Court is CLOSED today, Wednesday, January 17, 2018 due to the weather.

All campuses of Georgia Northwestern Technical College will be closed on Wednesday, January 17.  All classes and activities are canceled for the day.

All Harbin Clinic locations have a delayed opening of 11 a.m. today, Wednesday Jan. 17. We will continue to watch weather and road conditions and will have a 10 a.m. update.

Travel could be tricky today because of the snowfall.  Some of the roadways may be slick due to subfreezing conditions.

Tim Herrington, the director of the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency, anticipates a warm-up on Thursday.  In the meantime, roads could hazardous so use caution if you must get out and about today.

Amid the deep freeze, Herrington urges local residents to bring their outdoor pets indoors.

Today’s high temperature is only expected to reach the upper 20s with wind chill values as low as -2.  Overnight lows will be in the mid teens.  The area should see a warm up into the low 40s on Thursday.
