May is observed annually as National Mental Illness Awareness Month.  The Rome chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (or NAMI) is using it as an opportunity to erase the stigma associated with mental illness.

Jim Moore, co-leader of NAMI Rome, attests that with the right medications, therapy and social environs, even those with severe mental illness may live a life of recovery.

NAMI Rome will hold its monthly educational meeting on Monday, May 21st from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at First United Methodist Church in downtown Rome.  Bill Carruthers, a statewide advocate for those with mental illness, will be the guest speaker, according to NAMI co-leader Bonnie Moore, who invites local residents to come learn from ‘the man on fire’.

Light refreshments will be served.  For more information about the meeting, call (706) 506-5010 or email namiromega@gmail.
