The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season drew to a close last Thursday, and it was no doubt a history-maker.  Many people are still in recovery from three major hurricanes that made landfall – Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Carla Maton, Disaster Program Manager for the Northwest Georgia chapter of the American Red Cross, says that Red Cross relief efforts continue in the affected areas.  She adds it was a ‘whirlwind of activity’ for volunteers when those hurricanes hit in late August-mid September.  The recovery is nowhere near over for many in places such as Texas, Puerto Rico and the US. Virgin Islands, and the Red Cross continues to respond to their needs.

Maton indicates that interested parties may assist Red Cross relief efforts by making a donation to the organization.  Contributions may be made towards hurricane relief, to assist those impacted by wildfires in California or even for  relief efforts closer to home.  For more information, call 1(800) RED CROSS or visit

Volunteers are also sought by the Northwest Georgia chapter of the American Red Cross.  More information is available on the website.
