Day one of the inaugural Rome Balloon Festival is today!  The festival will continue through Saturday at the Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field in Rome.  Gates open at 1 pm with the festival launch at 4 pm both days.

Jeremy Kwaterski, event promoter, says that characters such as Sylvester and Tweety Bird, Tom and Jerry, Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Peppy Le Pew as well as the Purple People Eater will be featured on the balloons.

And be sure to stick around into the evening hours for the Moon Glow.  It is described by Kwaterski as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’.

The Rome Balloon Festival will feature tethered hot air balloon rides, aircraft displays courtesy of the Museum of Flight, formation flights by Tiger Flight, a kids’ carnival featuring bounce houses and (of course) festival food.  Details are online at and via social media.

Wind speeds this weekend could affect the festival launch; event officials are keeping track of the latest forecast.
