The Rome City School system is in mourning after a 14-year-old Rome High student drowned on Saturday at Little River Canyon in Alabama.

Josue Andres Lopez, who was in the midst of completing his freshman year at RHS, reportedly went underwater at Martha’s Falls at about 1:30 pm and never resurfaced.

Tasha Twyman, spokeswoman for the city schools, states in a media release issued on Sunday, “Rome City Schools is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Rome High School ninth grade student Josue Andres Lopez.  Counselors and additional system representatives will be available throughout each day this week on campus to assist students during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with the Lopez family and all those affected by this loss.”

This marks the final week of the 2017-2018 school year for students at Rome City Schools.
