Organizers of the 3rd annual HUG (Hearts United Gathering) say that tickets are no longer available for the (free) event, but you may be able to find a seat if you get there early.
Reverend Eric S.C. Manning, the current pastor of Emanuel AME Church (Mother Emanuel) in Charleston, South Carolina, will serve as the keynote speaker for this year’s HUG, to be hosted by One Community United this Thursday night in the Wilder Center of First United Methodist Church. The event is scheduled to get underway at 6 pm.
Mother Emanuel is the church at which Dylan Roof, a self-proclaimed white supremacist, opened fire on the evening of June 17th, 2015; nine people died in the attack, including the pastor.
Cheryl Jenkins, a representative of One Community United, indicates that in addition to seating at the Wilder Center, a live video stream of Manning’s talk will be provided in the sanctuary of the church (along with seating) in order to accommodate the overflow.
Manning will address the subject of “Racial Healing and Reconciliation”, according to fellow One Community United member Charles Love. And maybe Mother Emanuel Church has authority on the subject – members of the congregation chose to forgive Roof for his horrendous act.
Love adds that Reverend Manning is scheduled to speak to local pastors and church leaders on this same subject during a special event at Lovejoy Baptist Church to be held on Thursday morning.
