The 11th annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes will take place on Friday, October 12th. Activities will get underway at 11 am at Rotary Plaza.
This is the event where men traverse Broad Street in downtown Rome in high heels to raise awareness of domestic violence. It is a lighthearted approach to an otherwise weighty subject, comments Ashley Demonbreun-Chapman, who serves as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Hospitality House for Women, Inc. Those who wish to participate in the walk may still register via www.hospitalityhouseforwomen.org. There is no registration cost; act now to receive a free t-shirt.
Demonbreun-Chapman adds that shoes will be provided to gentlemen who do not have any high heels of their own. You can also visit the Hospitality House Thrift Store on Shorter Avenue for a great selection of shoes.
Walk a Mile is one of a number of activities being held in October to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Demonbreun-Chapman estimates that local law enforcement officers respond to about 2,000 calls each year related to domestic violence; there aren’t nearly that many crisis calls received by the House.
The Hospitality House offers a crisis line 24-hours a day to domestic violence victims; it may be reached at (706) 235-4673 (HOPE).
